Do It Yourself: On Moving On

Four months ago today I started my site Thesunsetgirl.com at a free WordPress blog.

A month later I moved it to a self-hosted WordPress blog.

It has been quite a bumpy ride.

I faced so many challenges that are mostly ‘behind the scene’.

I didn’t even know they existed!

However, like I have said several times before, I chose to count my blessings instead because there is no way we can control other people actions. Therefore, I am beyond grateful for the special blessings I’m dedicating this blog to.

For all they have done both in the real life and on-line.

My parents, my sister, my cousin Valya
The Sumaiku sisters, Lia B. Sudarso and Meidy Pandjaitan.

Just in case you have not noticed it yet, I am far from perfect. These people, however, have been helping me to improve myself. They show me ways on how not to easily give up, to stay true to myself and most importantly to try giving people (myself included) another chance. I do not know how I can survive without them. If it is up to me, some major and unnecessary changes might have already happened.

Instead, I move on.

First, I opened a private family group.

I started it at one of the sites my families frequently use on July 7th 2010. It is a place to share personal stuff (pictures of my family members, my future plans and even my own family pictures one day) with my close families and friends only. No link and screen shot here because as I said before, it is private.

The minute I made that group, I felt the relief I had never felt before because I do not have to worry about sharing personal stuff with people who are not parts of the family anymore. The complaints from my immediate family also stopped once the group started.

It is about WHAT to share WHERE.

Second, I helped my friend Ita making her Facebook fanpage.

Ita’s fanpage

She wanted to start her own personal business and she needed help with the promotion on Facebook where, apparently, most people are nowadays. So we met at one of our favorite coffee shops on a Friday afternoon, July 30th 2010. I sat there making her fanpage even hours after she went back home. I owe her more than that. Really!

We both have the same people mentioned above to thank to for supporting this new fanpage just as what they have been doing in the group. I know it is not easy and we have a long journey ahead of us. Not to mention the ever changing setting of that social networking site! I am sure glad I am walking together with these people though.

One step at a time.

Third, I started a new collaboration blog today.

The blog and its Twitter page

As of now, there are 4 people running it so I am not the only one who blog there. However, unlike the dreams of many people who blog, this blog is not for creating a BLOGBUSTER nor it is for making money either! For everybody, it is a place to learn more about life by sharing bi-lingual (Indonesian – English) blogs.

For the people who blog there, the purpose is to meet the needs of both parties. The beginners who did not know how to start a blog at all will finally have a place to learn by doing. The advanced users who had not had the chance to use all the features on WordPress will finally be able to give them some tries.

Not to mention writing journals and some short stories.

When you keep moving on, you will see growths!

Have you experienced growths these days?

Do share!

    Hi Lusy
Yes everyday I see some kind of growth…home, work, this and that.

Thats my main reason why I don't share blogs among my family and relatives. Too much drama and I just don't have the time for gossip nor …even my husband doesn't know I have a blog. Is not like I am afraid. I just don't need an extra headache nor heart ache and beside…if I was to give it to my family and relatives i won't able to share certain things…ex. glimpse of what I bought for my husband or family. Even on Facebook…someone ask me how come so and so added you and not me? why asking me? send them a message…even pictures I don't posted it on facebook nor on blog. once they tell me I don't add any family photos for anyone. i don't really care what others say to me. I have a huge family and drama should be behind closed doors. for ex. among for my family i do share but not everything also. everything has it places.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience, sis! I will always remember your advice; when I do things, I should do them because I love doing them and not because of other reasons. It has been one of the pillars of my website – the advices I got from my on-line families.

This is the first year I share things on-line with people in the real life.

(Un)fortunately, with some parts of the extended families as well. My biggest pet peeve when it comes to sharing stuff on-line is lack of privacy. Somehow, extended families and relatives fall into the category of people who mostly disregard this. *sigh*

I shared some pictures in the group for people who live far away from me. Even my best friends will not be near me one day. I'm thinking on making a family website with a password for security but that's the long term plan.

Yes, there is place for everything. :-)

    Hugs!

Just remember when I was in high school, one of my closed friend was moving to another school cause her parents. But We kept in contact by sending a letters. And that's wonder me until now that I could write so many things on the letter and tell some joke about her old school.
You have done well sis. I'm thankful you helped me making fanpage. I was surprised you make it in the same day after I told you about the idea. On collaboration blog I tried to write something on the blog. As a beginner I wrote not much and very simple topic. Thanks for sharing it Lus….

You made me remember the time when I was still at the primary school. I used to have pen friends and we communicated by sending letters to one another. They live all over the country which was a nice thing. I lost contact with them though but it's okay I guess. That's life no? People do come and go. ;-)

The story about your friend made me smile. Where does she live now? Do you still keep in touch with her by letters? I hope you girls didn't break the tie.

As for the fanpage, don't mention it! It wasn't that difficult to make. Maintaining it is the bigger challenge, I think. I wish you good luck with everything!

Yes, let's practice how to blog the right way by sharing stories on our new collaboration blog. I have a feeling it will be so much fun! I'm already done with my part and will give it to you for the translation on an e-mail right after I post this reply. ;-)

    Talk soon. Hugs!!!

I already posted a reply to your comment but it’s not here and I don’t remember what I say. Ummm… I hope you will be able to get in touch with her again in the future, Ita. Maybe you can find some information from people back in Balikpapan so that you can track her?
I agree with the advanced technology is providing us a faster way to communicate but in a way, taking the joy out of it because I still remember how happy it was to receive a snail mail. Thanks for being here again. Hugs!!!

  • Vallya

I’m glad to be where u are, sist… Let’s learn together ok?? Hugs…..

  • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy – The Sunset Girl

Yes, let’s learn together. Thanks for being where I am – here and there – cousin! Big big hugs!!!

    • Vallya

U r welcome, sist… So happy ur new theme is ready now! Nice choice! I like it… ^_^ You keep on using dark theme ya? Integrity? hehe… HUGS!!!

      • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy Aaltje

The main reason why I keep using ‘black’ on my theme is to avoid any hassle. If I want a new background color then I will have to find matching colors for the link, hover, border and the list goes on and on… So I’m keeping the black one for now. Thank you!!!

Keep up the good job, Lusy. Looking at yours now, I realized I should have shared my experience a long time ago. Wish I had the confidence then as you do… :-) All the best!

  • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy – The Sunset Girl

Thanks so much, Ruzie. I believe in this: Anybody can do it. I’m sure you can do it too and even way better than me. I’ll be willing to help as best as I can, no doubt about it.

Right now, I’m still working with the new design – preparing everything at the same time getting everything ready to launch the link of the group blog for public some time next week.

It’s a bit hectic now. With the new Facebook page? Phew!!! I hope to be back to blogging regularly as soon as Monday. Again, thank you for the support! Hugs!!!

  • Lieke

I still need to learn more about Facebook.

    • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy Aaltje

I think you’re already okay with it. :-P xoxo

  • Vallya

I know you don’t have the group anymore but you make a new one for us to learn English. Thank you so much, sist! You also made many new things after this ones, right? Good luck with everything!!!

    • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy Aaltje

Don’t mention it, cousin! And thanks for everything! xoxo

  • Olive

None of these are working now huh? But you got some good replacements. Life is cool…

    • http://www.thesunsetgirl.com/ Lusy Aaltje

      No and Yes.

No, none of these are working ‘properly’.

Yes, like Valya said above, I made new things months after I made these.

However, the supports are still the same. We are still ‘here’ for each other. To be honest, all of us are too busy to meet nowadays. We’re even too busy to chat! But the friendships linger and the real ones will catch up one day right? When it does, it will be like the last time we hung out. :-)
